In 2016 Zachariah Rieke worked intensely on a new series of pieces that incorporated his gestural, sweeping style but that were wholly realized when he tore the existing canvas into sections and reconfigured the parts. What followed was spatially complex with gestural alignments and misalignments that changed the emotion captured in the strokes. The canvas is mounted on panel.
Prior to this, originating in 2005, Zack’s work is described as a layering of expressive Zen gestures derived from enso - a spiritual expression of raw emotion and interpretations of enlightenment that are expected to transfer to the viewer. The purity of the epiphany is never lost, but is captured in the painted gesture, and it is fresh and real each time it is viewed.
Opening Reception Saturday, February 18, 5-8 p.m.
